The northern Westfjords are characterised by majestic mountains and pristine fjords – and some challenging hiking opportunities! Ranging from old roads to faint or even non-existent trails, these hiking routes are mainly trodden by locals during the summer months.

This tour is exclusively offered as a private experience with a local guide. We will tailor the chosen hiking route to your interests and abilities, and customise the timing to fit your itinerary. If your dates and timings are flexible then that gives us the opportunity to hike when the weather is most ideal.

Price
The tour price depends on the number of hours booked with the guide, ranging from 4 to 12 hours, as well as any additional transport costs required from Isafjordur. If you have a rental car then in many cases you can pick up the guide yourself and save on the additional transport costs – but this of course depends on the roads and you always drive at your own risk.
The price is for a group size of 10 people but we can do bigger groups with an extra guide. Just let us know.

Preparation for the Tour

• Warm hiking wear suitable for Icelandic weather. We recommend multi-layered clothing including a non-cotton base layer, fleece or wool mid-layer and wind- and water-proof jacket and pants. Always err on the side of caution and dress for cold & wet weather when unsure – you can always remove a layer if it gets warmer.
• Hiking shoes or boots – Hiking in the mountains tends to be hard on the feet as many routes do not have any visible trails, leaving only rocky terrain to hike on. Hiking shoes are required for all but the easiest of trails, and if you’re looking for a more challenging hike to a mountain peak then hiking boots are essential.
• Hat and gloves.
• Sun glasses, sunscreen and after sun cream.
• Small backpack.
• Drinking water and food for the day. There will be no opportunities to buy refreshments anywhere along the way, so it’s critical that you ensure you have enough for the day. On some hikes there are drinkable streams along the way, allowing you to fill up your drinking bottle enroute and carry less drinks.
