Private Hornstrandir Fox Watching
A private fox watching tour to the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve to see the fox in its natural habitat!
• A 5-6 hour boat trip scenic views of the landscape and opportunities to see marine life
• Sail under the stunning Haelavikurbjarg, one of the largest bird cliffs in Europe
• Hike the towering Hornbjarg cliffs, a bucket list hike and photographer’s favourite
• Enjoy abundant birdlife with the area being home to 50 bird species, and possibly see the arctic fox
The Hornvik cove is one of Iceland’s most extreme places. Featuring a pair of massive 400m+ bird cliffs, Hornbjarg and Haelavikurbjarg, each guarding its side of the Arctic Ocean facing entrance, this is generally considered the highlight of the Hornstrandir nature reserve. However there is nothing convenient or comfortable about Hornvik – as one Westfjordian put it: “God is not there”.
You either get to Hornvik by boat or by multi-day trekking. If you are like most travelers and prefer the first option then we offer a private day tour option including 5-6 hours hiking along the epic Hornbjarg cliffs plus 5-6 hours spent on the boat. The birdlife in the cliffs is extremely rich and as in other parts of Hornstrandir, foxes are frequently spotted in Hornvik.
Hiking along Hornbjarg is an unforgettable “edge of the world” experience as you digest the jaw-dropping cliff heights, the amazing views of Hornvik and the Arctic Ocean, the teeming birdlife, and the extreme nature: Hornvik is one of the most wonderful places in Iceland on a good day, but quite the opposite on a bad one!
Please note
The hike is on a trail that is both narrow and steep at times and the boat ride can be bumpy even on an otherwise fine weather day. If you want a tour that very unlikely to be cancelled due to weather, are terrified of heights, or get easily boat sick then you might want to consider an alternative.
Price
This is a private tour and the price starts from 500,000 ISK including the boat transfer and guide.
Duration
The tour duration varies between 10-12 hours based on the hiking speed of the group, the weather & sailing conditions.
Availability
Availability depends mostly on the boat schedule so let us know if you are flexible with the date.
• Warm hiking wear suitable for Icelandic weather. We recommend multi-layered clothing including a non-cotton base layer, fleece or wool mid-layer and wind- and water-proof jacket and pants. Always err on the side of caution and dress for cold & wet weather when unsure – you can always remove a layer if it gets warmer. Hornvík is open to Arctic winds and there is no temporary shelter available.
• Cap to cover the ears and gloves
• Good hiking shoes, preferably waterproof
• Drinking water and food for the day. There will be no opportunities to buy refreshments anywhere along the way, so it’s critical that you ensure you have enough for the day.
• Motion sickness medication if you feel sea sick. The boat ride is 5-6 hours and on a windy day the boat ride can be bumpy.
• Camera if you would like to take photos.
We reserve the right to deny boarding to insufficiently prepared participants, whether without food or without proper clothing, for safety reasons.
• Return boat transportation in covered passenger ferry
• Hiking guide throughout the tour
• Lunch pack
• Water bottle
